YORK COUNTY — York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office (YPSO) has charged the man who was taken into custody after barricading himself in his home on Sunday, Dec. 5.
YPSO deputies were called to the scene in the 100 block of Wellington Drive for a welfare check at 1:41 p.m. on 41-year-old William Lee Ware. Neighbors told the deputies that Ware was very agitated, that he was armed, and refusing to come out of his house.
He also fired multiple shots both outside and inside the house. He threatened to shoot the deputies when they made contact with him.
At 11:55 p.m., Ware came out of his house and was immediately taken into custody.
Ware was charged with reckless handling of a firearm, brandishing a firearm, discharging a fire, shooting in a public place, and making threats.
YPSO was assisted by York County Fire and Life Safety, James City County and Newport News police departments.
