WILLIAMSBURG 一 The Arc of Greater Williamsburg celebrated the opening of its new 10,000-square-foot building Thursday with a ribbon-cutting attended by community members, Arc supporters and local officials.

The new building at 438 McLaws Circle marks a milestone for the organization, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Arc serves adults with developmental disabilities through programs including life skills, cultural enrichment and caregiver support. The Arc of Greater Williamsburg is one of 630 chapters nationwide and receives no state or federal funding, relying on grants, fundraisers and donations.

John McGlennon, chair of the James City County Board of Supervisors, spoke during the ceremony, reflecting on how much the Williamsburg area has changed over the past 50 years and recognizing Pam McGregor’s 20 years as executive director. He also thanked the community members who have supported the Arc over the years.

“Congratulations to the Arc for this great accomplishment,” McGlennon said.

McGregor addressed the crowd, reflecting on the 13 months leading up to the opening and the Arc’s history.

“We are very excited to officially open our building today to our community and share this homecoming 50 years in the making. This represents a building where people of all abilities belong, are respected and empowered to reach their full potential and to be happy,” she said.

The new building gives the Arc room to continue its current programs and expand its day programming. Looking ahead, McGregor said the new facility represents more than a new space for the organization.

“Hope and dreams are wonderful things, but without vision you can’t have advocacy and without advocacy you can’t have change. What we hope here is that this vision has led to lasting change. To all of our community members, welcome to the Arc. To our Arc families, welcome home.”
