HISTORIC TRIANGLE — “Ten Questions with” is a series that allows readers to get to know local business leaders, volunteers and community members in the Historic Triangle.
This week, meet Kenita Hill.
What is your job title and description?
I’m a Voice Actor. A voice actor is an unseen person that you hear in a TV commercial, on the radio, in a movie trailer, in an audiobook, in a voicemail, making live announcements on an awards show, in a video game, or in animation. We are everywhere!
Who do you interact/work with regularly?
I have clients all over the world. I typically work with production companies, advertising agencies, and agents.
How do you/your organization interact with the local community?
Last year, I started highlighting businesses in my community on my “WOW Wednesday. (We Outside Williamsburg Wednesday)” posts on Instagram. Doing the posts allows me to learn more about the businesses and services offered in Williamsburg. I’ve highlighted coffee shops, restaurants, a souvenir shop, and a shop featuring outdoor gear. I’ll be giving shout-outs to other businesses in the Historic Triangle.
What is something about your job most people wouldn’t know about?
Voice acting requires quite a bit of training to sound “natural” when providing a lot of information in 15-30 seconds.
How do you define success?
Achieving personal goals no matter how big or small.
What is your most successful accomplishment to date?
This is a tough question. I’ve worked on many projects I’m proud of over the past five years, and some resulted in winning Telly Awards. I’m particularly proud of the project that I voiced introducing the Shockoe Project in Richmond.
How long have you lived/worked in the Historic Triangle?
My family and I moved to the area in 2014. This is one of my favorite places.
What is your favorite part of being in the Historic Triangle?
The Historic Triangle is a charming place. I love DoG Street! I enjoy the museums, especially Jamestown Settlement because they bring in artists and lecturers and have interesting exhibits. In addition, I love amusement parks, so having Busch Gardens in my backyard is a treat.
What do you do for downtime/to relax?
I’m currently taking guitar lessons at Authentic Guitars. It’s much harder than I thought it would be, but it’s a lot of fun.
What is the next step in your journey?
I’ll continue exploring the various genres of voiceover, pursue more on-camera work, and learn how to play three songs on the guitar by the end of the year.
