(City of Williamsburg)

WILLIAMSBURG — Fire damaged a home in the 100 block of Woodmere Drive in the early morning hours Monday.

According to the City of Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Fire Department, with mutual aid from the James City County Fire Department, responded to the reported residential structure fire at 2:42 a.m.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:50 a.m. to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the residence, officials said. Crews swiftly deployed, successfully knocked down the flames and contained the fire primarily to the room of origin by 2:54 a.m.

Firefighters conducted extensive salvage and overhaul operations to ensure no further fire spread within the home, the city added.

The residence was occupied at the time of the fire, and smoke alarms in the home alerted the resident in time to evacuate safely.

“This incident is a critical reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms in your home, ensuring they are no older than 10 years, and maintaining a well-practiced exit plan for emergencies,” the city said in a statement.

Approximately 20 firefighters worked to bring the incident under control by 3:41 a.m., the city said. The Williamsburg Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction team is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. One resident has been temporarily displaced.

The Williamsburg Fire Department thanked the Peninsula Regional Emergency Communications Center and the James City County Fire Department for their assistance.
