68-year-old Virginia Beach man identified as victim in fatal fire

VIRGINIA BEACH — Friday update: Officials have identified the 68-year-old man who died in a townhouse fire on Wednesday night.

Edward “Ted” M. Wood died when a townhouse caught fire in the 400 block of Cadbury Circle. First responders discovered him at 10:55 p.m., just minutes after they were called to the scene, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is still investigating the fire, but they believe smoking materials may have been involved in some way. Wood’s exact cause of death is also being investigated by the medical examiner, according to the VBFD.

The VBFD is encouraging smokers to make sure that their materials are completely put out before they throw them away. They also want Virginia Beach residents to make sure that they have working smoke alarms in the home.

Thursday update: A man died on Wednesday night after a Virginia Beach townhouse caught fire.

Firefighters found the man dead on the first floor of a townhouse in the 400 block of Cadbury Circle around 10:55 p.m. They were called to the scene of the townhouse fire minutes before that and arrived with the Virginia Beach Police Department and emergency medical services, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

During the initial call for service, the VBFD were told that a person was trapped inside the home. When they arrived, another person who was home at the time of the fire had escaped with no injury, according to the VBFD.

The fire started on the first floor of the home, and the entirety of the two-story townhouse was filled with smoke. The fire did not spread to neighboring units.

After the fire was extinguished, two VBPD officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. They are in “good condition,” according to the VBFD.

The fire is currently under investigation.
