YORKTOWN – On Saturday, Sept. 12, Yorktown Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an afternoon of food, fun and community. The festivities will honor the creation of the library board and feature a photo booth, community art project and a special exhibit. The free celebration is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m.
The York County Board of Supervisors established a five-member citizen board on Sept. 16, 1976, to oversee the administration of the York County Public Library.
“I think it’s important to celebrate it because it shows what people can do when they all come together for a common cause,” said Easter DiGangi, president of the nonprofit Friends of the York County Public Library. “Libraries are part of that ecosystem to help provide that opportunity for people to better themselves.”
DiGangi said the community art project, which was inspired by previous work by library staff member Michelle Paxton, will be a mosaic where attendees can fill out a blank space with “something positive,” like a favorite library memory or book cover. There will be two large boards, one for Yorktown Library and one for the Tabb Library. DiGangi said, even though the celebration is being held at Yorktown Library, they “want to make sure both locations feel that library love.”
The special exhibit will feature poster boards highlighting the history of York County’s public libraries.
Friends of York County Public Library will host a black-tie-optional gala on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Yorktown Freight Shed. The event will include music from swing/jazz group Good Shot Judy and catered by Boards and Moore. Tickets are $85, with proceeds going to fund Friends of York County Public Library events, such as the Summer Reading Program or author talks.
Yorktown librarian Pearl Derlaga will present a slideshow of historical photos at both events.
