Aspiring chefs in the Historic Triangle are now able to cultivate their skills in a new upcoming training program.
The ChefsGo 1.0 program is being offered at the Historic Triangle campus of Thomas Nelson Community College.
The community college offers the certificate program, including 11 weeks of experience in the classroom and in the kitchen, at its campus at 4601 Opportunity Way, according to a Thomas Nelson Community College news release.
The courses are taught by renowned local chefs.
“Thought and designed by highly skilled local professionals, the program will touch on all basic academic and culinary skill sets preparing the individuals for possible entry positions in the Hospitality arena.” Waypoint Seafood and Grill Chef Hans Schadler said in a statement on the Thomas Nelson Community College website.
The course also offers a series of mentorships in which students get hands-on experience with an area chef in a paid position.
The classes are interactive and allow for students to enter with no prior culinary skills, according to the release. In the program, classes cover intensive practice such as foundational culinary techniques, knife skills, preparing sauces, as well as proper kitchen sanitation, the release said.
The course is highly competitive. This is the first year of the program, the release said.
There are only 15 spots available and students must attend at least one of the information sessions in November. The next and final available session is Nov 28.
While there are scholarships available, tuition is $1,500 for most students.
The Williamsburg Economic Development Authority and James City County Economic Development Authority is offering one-time $5,000 grants to help cover the tuition cost, according to the Thomas Nelson Community College website.
The James City County Office of Economic Development has participated in the program as well through both coordination and marketing efforts.
Other program partners include the City of Williamsburg Economic Development Authority, Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association.
Students who enter the program in the Spring of 2018 are scheduled to graduate in August later that year and receive a certificate.
