NEWPORT NEWS — A photography exhibit marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks opens Sept. 11 at the Virginia War Museum, 9285 Warwick Blvd.
“25 Years in Focus,” featuring 21 photographs by Vernon L. Carter, runs through Oct. 31.
Carter was in New York on a photography assignment shortly after the attacks. He walked from his workplace in Lower Manhattan to Ground Zero, where he was escorted to an elevated platform reserved mainly for law enforcement, first responders and families of victims to observe cleanup efforts. He later photographed the surrounding area.
“Twenty-five years later, these photographs offer a powerful way to remember the lives affected by September 11 and to reflect on how those events continue to shape our collective memory,” said Airris Madden, assistant director of Newport News Parks and Recreation for Arts, Culture and Engagement. “Through Vernon Carter’s lens, visitors can see a moment in history while also considering the stories, experiences and memories carried forward through the generations.”
Visitors can also add written memories to “Echoes of 9/11: The Stories We Carry 25 Years On,” a companion project that will become part of the museum’s archives.
Admission, which includes the exhibit, is $6– $8.The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
