Williamsburg sets dates for residential leaf pickup

Raked leaves will begin lining curbs across Williamsburg in the coming weeks as the city prepares to start its annual residential leaf collection program Nov. 2.

The free service runs through January and divides the city into two collection routes, Red and Blue, with pickups scheduled every other week.

The Red Route begins the week of Nov. 2, while the Blue Route begins the week of Nov. 9. Each route has five scheduled collection weeks.

An address lookup tool at williamsburgva.gov/leafcollection identifies which route serves each home.

Leaves must be raked to the curb or road edge by 7 a.m. on the first day of a scheduled collection week. They should not be placed in the street or drainage ways. Crews will collect each street once during its designated week.

The city asks that leaf piles remain in open areas accessible to vacuum trucks. Crews cannot collect piles blocked by vehicles, trees or bushes. Sticks and limbs should not be mixed with leaves.

If rain interrupts collection, crews will resume on the route where they stopped before the weather delay.

Bagged leaves also may be placed at the curb for collection with regular garbage on any collection day, with a limit of 10 bags per household per day. The program is limited to residential areas. Some private streets and neighborhoods are not included.

Collection reminders are available through the RECollect service at williamsburgva.gov/leafcollection.
