HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Falling the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday was created to promote and support local small businesses.
“Shopping local this Saturday is more than a purchase — it’s an investment in the small businesses that strengthen and define our community. Every dollar spent locally supports jobs, dreams, and the vibrant character of Greater Williamsburg,” explained Terry Banez, CEO of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce.
Small Business Saturday, started in 2010 by American Express and co-sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), is an annual event that was created to encourage holiday shopping at small, local businesses and bring more dollars to small entrepreneurs.
Edward Harris, CEO of Visit Williamsburg said, “On Small Business Saturday, we encourage the community to shop local and support the unique businesses that make our Historic Triangle special. Using the Historic Holiday Pass, you can explore a wide array of local gems, from charming boutiques to family-owned restaurants, and impact the heart of our community. This holiday season, let’s celebrate the spirit of giving by shopping small and keeping the magic of our historic area alive!”

Small businesses and local communities need support now more than ever, according to the SBA, adding that in 2023, projected spending in the U.S. from those who shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday was around $17 billion.
This year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has partnered with American Express on a Small Business Hurricane Recovery grant program to support small businesses impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. As part of that initiative, American Express will donate $1 for every purchase made on an American Express Card at a qualifying U.S. small business on Small Business Saturday.
“Together, we can make a big difference by choosing to shop small!” Banez expressed.
