John “Jack” McAveney (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

John “Jack” McAveney of Yorktown, VA passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News, VA, surrounded by his loving family.

Jack was the beloved son of the late William and Marion McAveney and a cherished brother to Bill, Bob, Maureen, George, Patti, Jerry, and Helene, along with their partners. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews, his extended family, and the countless friends whose lives he touched.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Jack spent his early years there before moving with his family to Kearny, NJ, at the age of 11. He later graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University and built a successful career as a Traffic Manager with Lipton Tea Co., General Foods Co., and Metaframe before serving as a Traffic Analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense. His career eventually brought him to Yorktown, VA, where he made his home and formed lasting friendships that became like family.

Jack was a talented football player during his grade school and high school years, competing against strong opponents until a shoulder injury sidelined him from the game. Though he could no longer play, his passion for football never faded, and he remained a dedicated New York Giants fan, following the team closely and investing his heart in every season.

In addition to football, Jack had a deep love for outdoor sports. He was an avid skier, spending many winters on the slopes of Hunter Mountain, NY, where he and his friends rented houses and made lifelong memories. He also enjoyed water skiing on Toms River and Greenwood Lake in NJ, sharing summer days on the water with his brothers and friends.

Jack was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, where he actively participated in many events and service activities, embodying the values of charity, unity, and fraternity.
His social abilities, kindness, and humor enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be fondly remembered by his Newport News community, his lifelong New Jersey friends, and his devoted family.

A Private Celebration of Life Service will be held for friends and family in Williamsburg, VA.

Additional services in NJ are being arranged by Parow Funeral Home in North Arlington.
