Barbara Lee Brooks, a remarkable woman whose life was defined by love, wit, and dedication, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born on August 13, 1941, in Ventura County, California, Barbara lived a vibrant life of 83 years, leaving behind an inspiring legacy that touched the hearts of many.
Barbara’s journey began with a distinguished career with the government in Washington D.C., where her keen intellect and strong sense of justice were evident. She later transitioned into Human Resources, contributing her talents to both Montgomery Ward and Sears. In each role, she exemplified professionalism and compassion, always striving to make a difference in the lives of others.
Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara embraced a rich tapestry of personal interests. An avid scrapbooker and skilled crocheter, she created art that preserved cherished memories and wove warmth into the lives of her loved ones. Her collection of frogs brought joy and whimsy to her home, symbolizing her playful spirit and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
Barbara’s faith was a guiding light throughout her life. As a dedicated member of Kings Grant Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, she found strength in community and service, touching countless souls with her steadfast devotion. Her family was always her foremost priority, and she approached life with a wit that left others smiling long after she spoke.
Her blue 2004 Dodge Dakota was a testament to her vibrant personality, catching the eyes and admiration of all who saw it.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Rome and Lizzie Brown, her sister Carol and her pups Charlie and Buster. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 62 years, Ronnie; her cherished children, Jeff and Rhonda; her adored grandchildren, Alexis, Jonathan, Isabella, Matthew, Emily, Stephanie, Steven, and soon-to-arrive Sebastian, as well as her great-grandchildren Kaitlin, Julia, Christopher, Conner and Caleb who will continue her legacy of love. She is also survived by her brother Jim, an extended family, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close.
Barbara was adored by many, and her loving and caring nature made it easy for her to receive the love that she so freely gave. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her.
Family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm. A service celebrating Barbara’s life will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 11 am in Kings Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Road in Virginia Beach. Barbara will be laid to rest privately at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a charity of one’s choice in Barbara’s memory, as a way of honoring her generous spirit.
