WILLIAMSBURG — Our father, grandfather, and friend, Overton U. Mayo Sr., 90, answered the Master’s call Friday, June 25, 2021, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in Williamsburg. His life began Aug. 14, 1930, son of the late Bertha Branch Mayo and Allen James Mayo of Buckingham.
He attended Petersville Baptist Church in New Canton. His years of dedicated service to the church and the Lord comforts us in knowing that he is with the Lord in heaven. He served as the bass singer for the “Shadows of Heaven” for 30 years, singing the praises of God at many churches with the group. Now, he is resting in the arms of the Lord, where he knows no more suffering, pain, or sorrow.
Overton was joined in holy matrimony for over 50 years to the late Margaret B. Mayo. Unto this union, they were blessed with eight children (four girls and four boys). In 1972, the family relocated to Williamsburg.
He was employed at Sheldon Lumber Company and retired after 50 years of dedicated service.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Lawton K. Mayo.
Overton’s fond memories will forever be cherished by his daughters, Wanda Mayo, Angela Mayo, Rita Mayo, and Lolita Patrick; sons, Overton U. Mayo Jr., John Mayo, and Milton Mayo; brother, Morris Mayo; sister, Dorothy Johnson; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other loving relatives, and friends.
Mr. Mayo may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 1, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 2, at the House of Prayer Church of Deliverance No. 5, 310 Turlington Road, Newport News. Interment will follow in Petersville Baptist Church Cemetery, 3330 Petersville Church Road, New Canton.
