Betty Jo ‘B.J.’ Elliott, 81, joyous spirit known for her guidance and faith

Betty Jo ‘B.J.’ Elliott

Betty Jo Elliott, 81, lovingly known as “B.J.,” went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, in Williamsburg, Va., surrounded by her adoring family.

B.J. was born Dec. 18, 1935, in Blacksburg, Va., and was raised in nearby Roanoke. B.J. spent the greatest portion of her life raising her children alongside her husband Wally and ministering to many others in Williamsburg.

Sharing her enormous love and the word of Jesus was her main focus in life. This was reflected not only in the manner in which she raised her family, but also in the young students she assisted in school, her teenage youth group “TAG,” and the William & Mary Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. B.J. lived with a joyous spirit, immediately seen by all who knew her and who were blessed by her loving kindness, encouragement, humor and strong faith.

Betty Jo is survived by her husband of 55 years, Wallace Elliott; four children, Robert G. Calhoun III, Timothy Calhoun (Monica), Missy Elliott Brittain and Elizabeth Elliott Saunders (Todd); 12 grandchildren, who were her pride and joy, R.G., Chandler, Jennifer, Sarah, Travis, Mallory, Trent, Elizabeth, Amy, Catherine, Riley and Cooper, as well as her precious great-grandchildren; and sister, Suzanne Summerlin (Dan).

A celebration of Betty Jo’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25,
at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1677 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg.

The Elliott family would like to thank the many friends and church family for their love and support during B.J.’s illness. There simply are not enough words to express the gratitude we feel toward the nurses and staff at Riverside Hospice, Agape Home Care and Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. Betty Jo spent the last week of her life in the loving care of earth angels at the Hospice House and we are forever grateful. They treated her with the genuine care that she extended to all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Covenant Church Mission Fund Projects, 1677 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185; or to Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
