
Spiros Wallace Stieffen, 92, a resident of James City County, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born April 29, 1925, in Newport News, Va.
He spent most of his life in Hampton, where he, his father and his brothers formerly owned and operated Buckroe Beach Amusement Park. Mr. Stieffen earned a B.S. degree in business from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the Navy during World War II. He was elected to the Virginia General Assembly in 1978 to represent the 91st District. He represented the 91st District until 1994.
He served as the chairman of the Chesapeake Bay and its Tributaries Committee and the committees of Privileges and Elections, Roads and Internal Navigation and Finance.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to tell stories of his many trips.
Mr. Stieffen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jacqueline Canepa Stieffen; brother, Dennis R. Stieffen of Hampton; daughter and her husband, Lynn and Jimmy Haggard of Williamsburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Meredith Haggard Maust, and her husband, Brock of Newport News, Va., and J. Marshall Haggard, and his wife, Lucy Kay; great-granddaughter, Beatrice Scott Haggard of Nashville, Tenn.; and all of his nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Stieffen’s request, there will be no ceremonial service.
