Born in Denver, Colo., on January 5, 1957, to the late Robert Amundson and Mary Jo (Streeter) Amundson, Paul Richard Amundson, 59, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer surrounded by his family.
Paul attended Mullen High School in Denver, where he won the State Championship for shot put in 1975 and held the record until 2000, at which time he was inducted in the Hall of Fame.
He was awarded a football scholarship to Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo. Following college, Paul began a long and successful career in food sales with companies such as American Chicle, Kraft, and Tennessee Pride Sausage, and for the last 15 years, Smithfield Foods, Smithfield. In 2013, Paul was awarded Salesman of the Year for the Food Service Sales Team while in Florence, Italy.
Paul met and married his wife, Nancy (Stevens) Amundson in Kansas City, Mo., in 1985, and his sons, Steven of Nashville, Tenn., and K. Leigh of Williamsburg, were born there. Moving to Nashville, the family spent many years developing a strong, committed and loving network of friends based out of the St. Edward’s/Father Ryan Catholic community.
In addition to his wife and children, Paul leaves behind his brothers, Steve (Linda) Amundson and Terry (Janell) Amundson, and sister, Debbie Emerson, all from Colorado. Paul had an extended family to include wonderful brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and his amazing friends he had met throughout his career.
As strong as his work ethic and his faith in God was, his passion was for all sports, especially football. In his final days, Paul was able to watch his hometown team (Denver Broncos) win the Super Bowl Championship.
A memorial service will be held next month in Nashville, Tenn. A special thank you goes to the extraordinary team of oncology nurses at the Sentara Careplex Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
