Nonprofit Management Institute begins again in August [Free read]

Free to Staff and Board Members of Greater Williamsburg-Area Health and Human Service Agencies

The Nonprofit Management Institute at Thomas Nelson Community College will resume in-person classes on August 27 in Williamsburg. Now in its third year, the Institute is a joint initiative of Thomas Nelson Community College and NetworkPeninsula, a local capacity-building organization with programs that support more than 300 nonprofits across the Peninsula.

Since 2019, the Institute has welcomed 148 people representing 79 nonprofit organizations from across the Peninsula and beyond. Classes are designed to provide best practices in nonprofit management, leadership, and development. They are open to nonprofit staff, board members, volunteers, and anyone interested in learning more about this valuable sector.

Classes held during the pandemic took place online, however the decision to move back to in person was made in line with the return of in-person classes for area college campuses.

“This year’s classes will continue to address the current environment that finds nonprofits working in the midst of the ongoing COVID pandemic; as well as ensuring inclusion in all aspects of programming, hiring, and serving our communities,” said Karen Dutro, Executive Director of NetworkPeninsula and Director of the Nonprofit Management Institute.

The goal of the Institute is to help develop a stronger, more sustainable nonprofit sector. “Nonprofit staff and Board not only learn how to work more effectively on a daily basis, but they also learn the latest trends in the areas of fundraising, leadership, organizational development,” said Dutro. “This will enable them to excel in their roles to benefit their nonprofit and the communities they serve,” continued Dutro.

Katie Patrick, Executive Director of Grove Christian Outreach Center, says, “I encourage my entire team to participate in as many classes as they would like, since the opportunities to offer furthering education classes are difficult for a nonprofit of our size.”

Patrick has also taken many of the classes herself. “I have truly found the Nonprofit Management Institute to be extremely valuable. In addition to learning new things or building on my foundation of knowledge from years in the nonprofit sector, I had the opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from different organizations who I have continued to reach out to over the past year,” continued Patrick.

The Williamsburg Health Foundation was one of the first groups to support this new initiative. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided thousands of dollars in training funds to enable any interested staff or Board member from a health and human service organization serving greater Williamsburg the opportunity to take classes.

“Nonprofit work is demanding and requires leaders and staff to wear multiple hats to get the work done. They often don’t have the funding they need to fully staff all the roles needed. The Nonprofit Management Institute brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to nonprofits who are learning to work smarter not just harder” says Williamsburg Health Foundation CEO Carol Sale. “We are grateful for the critical work of the Nonprofit Management Institute as it supports not only current leaders but also future leaders,” concluded Sale.

A few of the Greater Williamsburg-serving agencies participating in this semester’s classes and receiving full tuition reimbursement are Grove Christian Outreach, Cornerstone Support Services, Here for the Girls, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, Natasha House, and All Together.

Full-day and half-day class options will be available and cover a range of topics such as how to engage your community, best practices for board governance, building your nonprofit’s evaluation capacity, inclusive hiring, and QuickBooks for nonprofits.

In addition to training funds available to qualifying organizations, discounts are available to nonprofit members of NetworkPeninsula. Each class provides participants with CEUs and CFREs, an international fundraising certification. Participants can work toward various Certificate Programs, including Fundraising Management, Nonprofit Leadership, Resource Development, Finance/Legal, and Organizational Development. Ultimately, participants can work toward a comprehensive Certificate in Nonprofit Management.
