Kings Dominion to Open New Roller Coaster Spring 2022

DOSWELL (Va.) — Kings Dominion has announced that it plans to open a new roller coaster at its Doswell park in the spring of 2022.

Tumbili will be a fourth dimension (4D) free spin wing roller coaster manufactured by Utah-based S&S Sansei Technologies. The coaster will feature free spinning seats that run parallel to the compact track layout. Kings Dominion notes that this will give riders a feeling of weightlessness.

The track length is approximately 770 feet and the ride itself will reach speeds of 34 mph during the 55-second ride duration. The compact track rises to a height of 112 feet.

Tumbili will open in the park’s Jungle Xpedition section on the footprint where the park’s now-defunct ride, The Crypt, once stood.

The new coaster will be only the third 4D free spin wing roller coaster on the east coast, with the other two located at the Six Flags parks in New Jersey (Great Adventure) and Massachusetts (New England). According to the Roller Coaster Database website, Tumbili also marks the first of such a coaster for Kings Dominion’s parent company, Cedar Fair.

The first 4D free spin coaster was conceptualized by Arrow Dynamics, Inc., which its development and manufacturing bankrupt the company. The first coaster, named X2, opened in 2002 at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is also scheduled to open a new roller coaster next spring, the long-awaited Intamin Amusement Rides’ multi-launch Pantheon. This coaster will feature two inversions, four launches, five air-time hills, a 95-degree drop, reach a height of around 180 feet, and a top speed of 73 mph.
