The Virginia State Police and its Bureau of Criminal Investigations are looking into what authorities say was the “in custody” death of a Yorktown woman.
The investigation is being conducted at the request of the Portsmouth Police Department.
State Police identified the woman as Carmeita Jane Vangilder.
She was 28 years old.
Very few details have been released regarding the case.
On Thursday, Portsmouth Police arrested Vangilder at around 8:18 p.m. in the 1000 block of Frederick Boulevard in Portsmouth.
Authorities would only say she was arrested on a warrant.
Vangilder was taken to Portsmouth Police headquarters “where she experienced a medical emergency,” according to a news release from police.
She was later pronounced dead by medics.
