SURRY— The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry could see intermittent service interruptions from Wednesday morning through Friday because of high tides tied to an approaching storm system, the Virginia Department of Transportation said Monday.
Tide levels are expected to stay elevated longer than usual, raising the risk of extended interruptions, VDOT said. The highest-risk periods are mid-morning Wednesday, late Wednesday night into early Thursday, Thursday morning into early afternoon, and late Thursday night into early Friday. Those estimates could shift as tide predictions are updated.
High water and strong winds can keep loading ramps at the docks from being safely raised and lowered onto the ferry boats, according to VDOT. Service will resume once water levels drop enough for ramps to be secured safely.
Drivers should expect possible delays. VDOT urges motorists to call the ferry hotline at 800-823-3779 or check the 511 Virginia website for thestatus updates before deciding whether to take an alternate route.
Drivers heading either direction should note the following alternate routes:
Fom Surry:
Take Route 10 to Route 258 to the James River Bridge (Route 17), follow signs for Interstate 64 west, exit onto Route 199 west (exit 242A) toward Williamsburg, then follow it to Route 31 (Jamestown Road).
To Surry from Jamestown:
Take Route 31 to Route 199, turn right onto Route 199, merge onto I-64 east and take the James River Bridge exit. After crossing the bridge, turn right onto Route 258, then right onto Route 10, and follow it to the Surry traffic signal.
