In 1776, the American Founders helped light the fire of revolution for the colonies’ independence from the Great Britain.
On Tuesday, fire of a different variety will burst over skies throughout the Historic Triangle. Here is a list of patriotic activities going on around the area:
In Colonial Williamsburg, numerous Fourth of July activities will take place throughout the day. The Fife and Drum Corps will perform with a musket and cannons salute behind the courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street at 10 a.m. A reading of the Declaration of Independence will take place on the courthouse steps at 12 p.m.
Those looking to dive back into 18th-century-style fun may participate in tomahawk throwing, dancing, quoits, tug-of-war, and three-legged races at Palace Green and Market Square.
A fireworks display will begin at 9:20 p.m., which will be best viewed from the Palace Green, Market Square, or the large open area near the Magazine.
At Busch Gardens Williamsburg, fireworks will light up the sky starting at 9:30 p.m.
In Yorktown, the site of America’s final victory over the British Empire, an Independence Day schedule is chock-full of patriotic activities.
At the Yorktown Victory Center, visitors may view military drills and participate in military exercises between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. In addition to listening to a performance by the Fife and Drum Corps at 11 a.m., visitors can learn about the founders of the nation.
In downtown Yorktown, a parade on Water and Main streets will feature the U.S. Coast Guard band starting at 9 a.m.
Before watching fireworks explode over the York River at 9:15 p.m., visitors may listen to a bell-ringing ceremony on the Riverwalk Landing Stage at 7 p.m. followed by the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command Brass Band at 8 p.m.
The York River fireworks may be best viewed along the waterfront. Those who reserve a spot on the Alliance ship may see the fireworks from a different point of view on the river.
