A 31-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning after leading police on a chase through York and James City Counties.
Jerrell Graves, of James City County, is charged with assault and battery of a police officer or firefighter, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving after forfeiture of license, driving after license revoked for driving while intoxicated, eluding police, failure to dim headlights and refuse to take blood or breath test, according to a York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Sheriff’s office deputies responded to a residence in the 100 block of Drew Road just before midnight on Saturday, sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Dennis Ivey said.
Police received a complaint that night about a very loud, large party at the residence, Ivey said. When police responded, they asked several times for the music to be turned down, but the music remained at full volume, he said.
Police decided to shut the party down, Ivey said. The number of people at the party is unclear.
As party attendees were leaving, a man, later identified as Jerrell Graves, left the scene in a four-door Chevrolet sedan at a high rate of speed, nearly hitting a deputy, Ivey said.
Police pursued the vehicle into James City County, where James City County Police joined in the pursuit.
The chase reached speeds of about 45 to 50 miles per hour, he said.
“It didn’t get very fast, he just didn’t stop,” Ivey said.
The car broke down on Route 199 due to an issue caused by damage that had been done to the car, he said. There was a loud beeping noise coming from the car, police said.
Police believed Graves had been drinking, but he refused to take a blood alcohol test, Ivey said.
No injuries resulted from the incident.
Graves was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail in Williamsburg.
