Several changes are coming to curbside recycling in the Historic Triangle.
Recycling services in the area are administered by the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority, which recently received approval from all three Historic Triangle municipalities and Poquoson for a contractor called County Waste to provide the service effective June 30.
The move to County Waste means recyclables will be picked up once every two weeks instead of the current weekly schedule, starting in July. Furthermore, the 18-gallon bins currently in use in James City County and Williamsburg will be replaced by 65-gallon bins like the ones currently used in York County. The new bins have wheels and a lid, according to a VPPSA news release.
The new bins will be delivered to residents between Memorial Day and mid-June. Residents of townhouses and apartments will receive appropriately sized bins.
After 30 days of using the new bins, residents will have the chance to switch their bins for either a 95-gallon bin or a 35-gallon bin. That can be done by contacting VPPSA after Aug. 4.
Along with the new schedule and new bins, the move to County Waste increases the types of plastic materials accepted for recycling. Included among the new plastics are bottles and jugs, wide-mouth containers like butter tubs and yogurt cups, clamshell containers like those from a salad bar, strawberry containers, bakery product containers and rigid plastics like those used in flower pots and buckets.
