Help Name Virginia Living Museum’s New Prickly Friend

(Virginia Living Museum)

NEWPORT NEWS — The Virginia Living Museum announced the arrival of its newest member — a young North American Porcupine from the Alaska Zoo — and to celebrate, the museum is inviting the public to participate in the naming for its quill-covered newcomer.

The female porcupine, which has already charmed the museum’s staff, represents a species that is now very rare in Virginia’s diverse landscapes, the museum said. Although sightings and rehabilitations have been recorded, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources states Porcupines are no longer present in Virginia and rare south of Pennsylvania.

Among the most distinctive features of these prickly rodents are their approximately 30,000 quills. Despite common misconceptions, these quills aren’t projectiles — they simply detach easily when predators make contact, according to the museum.

“She’s very brave and curious and loves to say hello to her keepers,” shares Carrie Bridgman, Bird and Mammal Curator. “Most of all she loves treats, especially sweet potatoes. We’re excited to involve the public in the naming process!”

Naming submissions will run Jan. 4 through 11, followed by public voting from Jan. 12 through 19.

The chosen name will be announced Jan. 20. Everyone who submits a name during the submission period will be eligible to win a special close encounter experience with the porcupine, the museum said.

The Virginia Living Museum said the new addition supports its ongoing mission to educate the public about the importance of protecting native species and their habitats, and it will continue to share updates about its new resident and announce any future welcome events.
