
NEWPORT NEWS — Fifth-year senior All-American Jahn Hines was honored Thursday by being named the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C). Hines, a native of Norfolk, Va., led the 18th-ranked Captains two a pair of victories in the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center prior to the start of the new year.
Hines was named MVP of the two-day tournament after scoring 19 points in an 81-50 victory over Misericordia University, and then pouring in 37 points against Berry College in the Championship game that was won by the Captains, 79-71. Hines made 20 of 40 shots overall in the two victories and was 5-for-9 from long range. He also pulled down 19 total rebounds, including a team-high 12 vs. Berry.
The C2C Player of Year last year has moved into seventh place all-time in scoring at CNU. Hines has scored 1,777 career points in 109 games played for a career average of 16.3 points per game. He is just 17 points behind Tra Benefield for sixth place all-time.
The weekly conference honor is the 14th won by Hines over his illustrious career, and the second this season. In the first two games of the season, Hines led the Captains to a pair of victories over Greensboro College and North Carolina Wesleyan University in the Roger Taylor Invitational at NCWU in Rocky Mount. He scored 44 total points, including 31 against the Battling Bishops, and also pulled down 15 rebounds in the two wins, including nine vs. NCWU, to earn his first weekly honor of the year.
Christopher Newport is 12-3 and returns to action on Saturday as the Captains host Emory University at the Freeman Center. CNU has won three straight games, and will be opening the new year by playing the top-ranked team in the country, as the Eagles are 10-0 so far this season, Tip off time is set for 2:00 p.m.
