WILLIAMSBURG — A member of the Williamsburg community for ten years, 8 Shires Distillery has events planned all year to celebrate.

The yearlong series of events, collaborations, and presentations by the staff of 8 Shires is designed to educate the public and reach out to like-minded citizens and businesses of the Historic Triangle, it said.

The celebration will be highlighted by the re-release of its historically inspired, museum-certified, “Jamestown 1608 Single Malt Whiskey,” which it calls the crown jewel of 8 Shires’ historical line of spirits.

Made from custom stills recreated from the originals brought to the New World by the Jamestown Settlers, and discovered by Jamestown Rediscovery’s team of archaeologists and fabricated by Corning Glass, the glass alembic stills operate just as their forebears did, and have produced not only an amazingly period-accurate spirit, but one that is remarkably smooth.

The spirit’s most interesting element may be the water used to make it. Collected from James Fort’s First Well by Jamestown Rediscovery in 2009, the water was gifted to 8 Shires Distillery.

The first well dug in Jamestown was the one to provide the water used to make its single malt. The spirit is available to taste and buy online, and at 8 Shires’ tasting room in Williamsburg.

”This celebration is a wonderful opportunity for 8 Shires to lose its reputation as ‘Williamsburg’s Best Kept Secret’ and to reintroduce itself to the people and history of Williamsburg, Virginia and beyond!” 8 Shires General Manager Tucker Casanova said.

This year’s celebration will allow 8 Shires to share its spirits and love of history with its fellow Virginians and guests, it said.

Located in Williamsburg at 7218 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg, VA 23185, 8 Shires Distillery is open from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with tours going on the hour until 6 p.m.
