
WILLIAMSBURG — Virginia State Police arrested a North Chesterfield man Thursday following an apparent road rage shooting on Interstate 64 in James City County that left a woman wounded.
According to state police, the shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 64 near the 232-mile marker between the Croaker/Norge and Route 199 exits.
Investigators said the driver of a maroon Dodge van was driving aggressively, rapidly changing lanes and tailgating another vehicle before pulling alongside it and firing multiple rounds.
A 40-year-old woman riding in the other vehicle suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The 18-year-old driver was not injured.
State police identified the suspect as Christopher Chappelle, 31, of North Chesterfield. He faces several charges, including malicious wounding.
Authorities later found the suspect vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 64 about five miles from where the shooting occurred. During the search, officers with the James City County Police Department located Chappelle at a nearby business and took him into custody.
Chappelle was transported to an area hospital after complaining of exhaustion.
The incident remains under investigation.
