
JAMES CITY COUNTY — On Saturday, March 27, at approximately 8:59 p.m., Virginia State Police reported to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 (I-64), westbound at mile marker 227 in James City County, which resulted in a fatality.
Preliminary investigations conducted by Virginia State Police revealed that a 2018 Toyota Rav4 was traveling in the left lane when the vehicle was cut off by another vehicle. The driver, Edward Myers of Linden, hit his brakes in order to avoid the vehicle and was struck from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 36-year-old Craig Alan Vanvleet of DesPlaines, Ill.
The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to run off the roadway, and ejected the passenger of the Chevrolet Silverado, 36-year-old Annette Marie Laux of ValParaiso, Ind. Laux died at the scene as a result of the injuries that she sustained.
Myers was uninjured and his front seat passenger was taken to the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). At this time, the identity and current status of the passenger has not been released.
Vanvleet was also taken to MCV and charged with reckless driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving without a valid operator’s license. Other charges are pending at this time.
