NEWPORT NEWS — William & Mary men’s and women’s cross country both won event titles at the Christopher Newport Invitational on Friday evening at the Lee Hall Manson Course.
On the men’s side, redshirt freshmen Henry Anderson and Carson Rackley led the way with top-five finishes. Anderson earned runner-up honors, covering the 8K course in a time of 25:47.15. Rackley finished less than five seconds back in fifth place.
As a team, the Tribe totaled 38 points with its first five runners placing among the top 16 at the event. W&M outdistanced second-place finisher VCU, who tallied 57 points.
For the women, sophomore Jennifer Tsai led W&M, finishing in fourth place. She covered the 6K course in a time of 22:16.79.
W&M won with a team total of 42 points, finishing ahead of second-place VCU, who had 66 points. The Green and Gold also outdistanced CAA foe Hampton who was fourth with 117 points.
Junior Kelly Ann Sutterfield and senior Lucy Young gave the Tribe two more top-10 performers. Sutterfield crossed the line in 22:25.83 to finish seven, one spot ahead of Young and her time of 22:37.13.
Senior Annika Griggs (23:16.78) and sophomore Lydia Wallis (23:36.31) rounded out the Tribe’s scoring runners in 17th and 21st, respectively. Redshirt freshman Becca Harkness gave W&M six runners in the top 25 with a 25th-place finish (23:46.37).
On the men’s side, W&M’s top seven runners were all redshirt freshmen and the first six finished in the top 25. Will Griesmer gave the Green and Gold three runners in the top 10 behind a ninth-place finish in a time of 26:06.51.
Wyatt Townsend (26:11.18) and Eric Fagan (26:29.53) rounded out the Tribe’s scoring group in 13th and 16th place, respectively. Amberson Bauer was the sixth W&M runner in the top 25, crossing the line in 26:39.3 to finish 23rd.
