Walsingham Academy came up short against Norfolk Collegiate in double overtime Friday evening, falling at home 71-59 in a grueling defensive battle.
In a showdown between two heavyweight programs, both Norfolk Collegiate and Walsingham came out aggressively and looking for a statement victory.
Walsingham fell behind early in the first quarter, trailing by three points after the first eight minutes of play. The Trojans rebounded in the second quarter, taking a 22-20 halftime lead against the Mighty Oaks.
The Trojans grew their lead by two points in the third quarter, but watched Norfolk Collegiate close that gap in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 55 apiece and sending to contest into overtime.
During the first overtime, both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Both Walsingham and Norfolk Collegiate logged two points in the first overtime, sending the game into a second overtime tied at 57.
Norfolk Collegiate finally found separation from the Trojans in the second overtime thanks to eight overtime free throw attempts. Of the eight attempts, Norfolk Collegiate sank six.
The free throws helped Norfolk Collegiate outscore Walsingham 14-2 in the final period of the game and helping the Mighty Oaks escape with a hard-earned win.
Despite going into double overtime, Friday’s contest wound up rather low scoring. Richard Washington scored 17 points, while Jaylin Stewart and Dusan Vicentic each logged 12 points.
Walsingham (16-5) will look to rebound Tuesday on the road against Greenbrier Christian Academy.

Jamestown Loses Second Consecutive Game
Jamestown watched as Smithfield clinched the Bay Rivers District regular season title Friday evening, falling to the Packers 62-56 at home.
For the second consecutive game, Jamestown’s leading scorers Mason and Evan Wang were held to single-digit scoring, which forced other players to step up for the Eagles.
Despite the scoring woes for the Wang twins, the Eagles were knotted up 24 apiece at halftime with Smithfield and held a 46-35 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Trailing by 11 points, Smithfield opened the fourth quarter on a 10-1 run, sparked by eight Ryan Jones points, to cut Jamestown’s lead to 47-45.
Michael Schmidt shut down the run with a two-pointer, but Smithfield responded with a Nick Turner 3-pointer and a Kendell Shepherd two-pointer to take the lead, which the Packers would not relinquish.
Jamestown (14-3) has now lost back-to-back games and will face a quick turnaround Saturday on the road against Warhill.

Solid performances by Jacob Murillo and Brent Parker, who scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, helped Grafton earn a 51-38 road win against York on Friday evening.
Parker hit a trio of 3-pointers early to help give Grafton a slight lead over York. The Clippers led the Falcons by six points after the first quarter and by seven points at halftime.
A strong second-half performance by Murillo helped Grafton pull away from York in the third quarter, during which the Clippers outscored the Falcons 17-8.
York had multiple opportunities to cut Grafton’s lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but could not convert on layup attempts at the rim.
Grafton (15-3) will host Jamestown on Tuesday, while York (0-19) will visit Smithfield that same day.

Four Warhill players scored in double figures during an 87-66 rout at home against New Kent on Friday.
Leading Warhill was Jimmel Davis, who posted a game-high 27 points. Dcarius Brooks had 15 points, Joseph Anzola logged 13 points and Terrell Ashby added 10.
The Lions withstood a fast-paced first quarter in which the two teams combined for 40 points. With Warhill leading by six points, the Lions outscored New Kent 23-14 in the second quarter to take a 46-31 halftime lead.
Scoring didn’t slow down for Warhill in the third quarter as the Lions posted another 24 points before costing through the fourth quarter for the win.
Warhill (5-12) faces a quick turnaround at home against Jamestown on Saturday.

Hart, Picott Lift HRA Over Norfolk Academy
Brian Hart and Anthony Picott each eclipsed 20 points scored Friday night during an 82-57 home win against Norfolk Academy.
Hart finished the game with a team-high 26 points, including six 3-pointers, while Picott added 23 points.
HRA built a five-point lead after the first quarter, but blew the game open in the second quarter by outscoring Norfolk Academy 25-7. By halftime, the Navigators held a 46-23 lead.
The second half was more of the same as HRA’s offense continued to give Norfolk Academy fits over the lopsided final two quarters of play.
HRA (13-6) has now won 10 consecutive games and will look to keep that streak alive Tuesday at home against Cape Henry.

Calloway Drops 32 in Bruton Rout of Poquoson
Zack Calloway scored a season-high 32 points to lead Bruton to a decisive 82-60 win at home against Poquoson on Friday.
The Panthers took an early lead in the first quarter, building an 11-point buffer over the first eight minutes of play. By halftime, Bruton’s lead grew to 13 points.
With Daniel Jones’ 20 points and Donevan Adkins’ 14 points, Bruton was able to continue running wild against the Islanders in the second half, which never saw Poquoson truly threaten Bruton’s lead.
Bruton (12-5) will look to extend its five-game win streak Tuesday on the road against Lafayette.

Strong Second Quarter Lifts Lafayette Past Tabb
Lafayette posted a big second quarter that helped the Rams earn a 62-53 road win against Tabb on Friday night.
After a fairly balanced first quarter that saw Tabb outscore Lafayette 12-8, the Rams pulled away 25-7 in the second quarter. Lafayette held a 33-20 halftime lead over Tabb.
The Tigers outpaced Lafayette by three points in the third quarter, but were unable to close the gap in the fourth quarter as the Rams secured the victory.
Lafayette (9-8) will host Bruton on Tuesday, while Tabb (9-10) will host Warhill on Tuesday.

WCA Runs Wild Against Norfolk Christian
It was a night of gaudy numbers for Williamsburg Christian Academy, which trounced Norfolk Christian 100-63 on the road Friday night.
Andre Brown led WCA with a career-high 34 points, while Cle’Von Greene added 22 points of his own.
Ra’Shawn Cook posted a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Eagles, while his brother Da’Shawn Cook chipped in 12 points during the win.
WCA (19-5) will play host to Life Christian Academy on Monday.
