On Tuesday, the Virginia High School League released its first football ratings for the 2015 season.

Two Historic Triangle teams sit in the top eight spots in the 4A East region, with Lafayette sitting in seventh place and Grafton one spot behind in eighth.

Lafayette currently has a 4-0 record and a rating of 23.5, which is the lowest of all undefeated 4A East teams.

For comparison, top-ranked Lake Taylor (4-0) has a rating of 27.0. Grafton has a 3-1 record and a rating of 22.25.

The Rams have a low rating relative to their record because of their strength of schedule through the first four games of the season. Lafayette is 4-0 against teams with a combined record of 3-14. Conversely, Grafton has posted a solid record against opponents with a combined record of 8-8.

Jamestown (0-4), the only other 4A school in the Historic Triangle, is not rated.

In Group 3A East, York sits in fifth place with a 3-1 record and a rating of 19.75. After losing their opening game to James Monroe — ranked fourth with a rating of 20.75 — the Falcons have won three consecutive games, including a 21-7 win against third-ranked Poquoson.

Tabb sits in 12th place with a rating of 16.75 after going 2-2 to start its season, while Warhill is 23rd with an 0-4 record and a rating of 12.25. Tabb’s two wins have come against Jamestown (0-4) and New Kent (1-3).

Warhill has faced a daunting schedule early in the season, placing 4A schools Churchland and Smithfield who both have 2-2 records. They also played undefeated 4A school Lafayette. The Lions have also lost to a top-5 ranked York in Group 3A East.

Lastly, in Group 2A East Bruton sits in 13th place with a 1-3 record and a rating of 14.0. The Panthers earned a season-opening win against 11th-ranked King William, but have since lost three consecutive games against teams in either 3A or 4A.

As the smallest school in the Bay Rivers District, Bruton would get a significant bump in its rating if able to knock off a larger school in the regular season.
