Lafayette put up big numbers in two categories during its 40-6 home win against Warhill: points and penalties.
While the Rams outgained the Lions 410-126 on the night, including four rushing touchdowns, they also committed 11 penalties for 98 yards — an uncharacteristic number for a normally composed team.
Rams Coach Andy Linn said the intensity of the rivalry between Warhill and Lafayette caused his players to lose focus during the game.
“There we too many penalties and too much of the personal stuff back and forth. You’ve got to be more focused than that,” Linn said. “You’re not going to go very far doing that.”
Friday night was an exception.
Despite the penalties, Lafayette had few problems moving against an undersized Warhill defense.
Nine seconds into the game, on the opening play from scrimmage, Lafayette running back Joseph Kraegenbrink took a handoff and cruised past the Lions defense for a 56-yard touchdown run.
Up 6-0 after the extra point was blocked, the Rams took to the air for their next points.
With the ball in Warhill territory, Lafayette quarterback Cheyton Pine found wide receiver Hazekiah Grimsley streaking past the secondary for an easy 37-yard pitch and catch touchdown. Kraegenbrink barreled over the Warhill defense for the 2-point conversion to put the Rams up 14-0.
On Warhill’s next possession, Pine, a University of Pittsburgh outside linebacker commit, came rushing through the offensive line untouched and delivered a huge hit on Warhill quarterback Ryan Creecy, causing a fumble the Rams recovered.
With seven seconds left in the first quarter and the Rams deep in Warhill territory thanks to the turnover, Pine took a quarterback keeper up the gut for a 10-yard touchdown to put Lafayette up 20-0 after 12 minutes of play.
“We were focused at the beginning of the game,” Linn said. “We were on fire.”
Warhill’s defense buckled down in the second quarter, forcing a pair of Lafayette three-and-outs and sacking Pine once.
Penalties began catching up to Lafayette as well, with a pair of 15-yard personal foul penalties stalled what seemed like a promising possession.
The stalled Lafayette momentum led to a scoreless second quarter from both teams and a 20-0 Lafayette lead entering halftime.
While one Kraegenbrink brother shined in the first half, the other stole the show in the second half.
Caleb Kraegenbrink started the scoring in the second half with a 38-yard touchdown run with 8:48 left in the third quarter that put Lafayette on top 26-0.
Warhill’s Collin Bright provided one of the best plays of the night for either team in response. With 4:56 left to play in the third quarter, Bright burst through the right side of the offensive line and sprinted his way into the Lafayette secondary.
When met by a Lafayette defender, Bright delivered a nasty juke and scampered into the end zone for a 67-yard touchdown run. The Warhill extra point was blocked, but the Lions were on the board and trailed 26-6.
Unfortunately for the Lions, their momentum was short-lived. Roughly three minutes later, Lafayette’s John Douglass hammered his way to a 7-yard touchdown that put the Rams up 32-6.
The last score of the game came 42 seconds later after a Warhill fumble set up a 12-yard touchdown run by Caleb Kraegenbrink, who bounced off a trio of Rams defenders en route to the end zone for the game’s final score.
With the win, Lafayette (2-0) has outscored its two opponents 81-6 this season. The Rams will continue their season at home against Smithfield on Sept. 18
Meanwhile, Warhill (0-2) will prepare for a road game against York the same day.

Tabb Uses Run Game to Down Jamestown
Tabb’s football team used a strong run game to control the clock and put up big yards during a 31-16 home win against Jamestown on Friday.
The Tigers converted on a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter, the first by Nick Hunter with 7:43 left to play and the second by TJ Jones with 2:40 left to play in the quarter.
Jamestown got on the board in the second quarter thanks to a 28-yard field goal by Carter Weissenfluh that cut Tabb’s lead to 14-3.
The Tigers answered back later in the quarter with a 33-yard field foal from Stanley Henderson that gave Tabb a 17-3 halftime edge.
Tabb quarterback Wil Marks had a quiet game statistically, but got on the board twice in the second half.
Marks had the lone score of the third quarter that came on a 9-yard touchdown run that put Tabb on top 24-3. Marks found pay dirt again in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Hunter, his second touchdown of the game.
Trailing 31-3, the Eagles found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to make the score more respectable.
Talented Jamestown running back Mark Lipscomb broke free and scored an 80-yard touchdown run that brought Jamestown within 31-9 with 7:24 left in the game.
With 1:02 remaining in the game, Hunter Brittain completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Highley for the game’s final score.
Tabb (1-1) will now prepare to play a road game against New Kent on Sept. 18, while Jamestown (0-2) will look for their first win of the season when they travel to take on Poquoson the same day.

A fourth-quarter punt return touchdown by Devin Campbell helped complete an 11-point comeback as the York Falcons defeated New Kent 37-27 on the road Friday.
The ending this week proved different than the one experienced last Friday when James Monroe scored a late touchdown to take down the Falcons.
A slow start by York found the Falcons trailing the Trojans 21-18 at the half and 27-18 in the third quarter.
Midway through the third quarter, the York defense began to shut down the New Kent offense and special teams provided a spark for the offense.
Trailing 27-23 early in the fourth quarter, Campbell returned a punt roughly 75 yards for the go-ahead score, putting the Falcons up 30-27.
York (1-1) would not relinquish the lead again, hanging on to the 37-27 victory.
The Falcons will continue their season at home against Warhill on Sept. 18.

Bruton Shows Grit in Loss to Smithfield
Bruton, classified in Group 2A and the smallest school in the Bay Rivers District, put up a good fight against 4A foe Smithfield during a 36-13 road loss Friday.
Trailing Smithfield 13-7 in the second quarter, Bruton recovered a fumble and took it 76 yards for a touchdown that tied the game at 13-13.
A late touchdown pass pushed the Packers to a 20-13 halftime advantage over Bruton.
The Packers added a safety in the third quarter to take a 22-13 lead over Bruton. A pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter put the game away.
Bruton (1-1) will look to rebound from the loss against another 4A opponent next week, Grafton, at home.

Grafton Gets Shut Out by Poquoson
The Grafton offense was unable to find any momentum against Poquoson, dropping a 21-0 road game Friday night.
Poquoson jumped on Grafton early, building a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and extending that lead to 21-0 by the end of the first half.
A scary moment occurred during the game when Grafton’s Jaden Barnes went down after finishing a 12-yard run. Barnes, whose leg was injured during the tackle, was taken off the field and to a hospital.
The second half featured more of a stingy Poquoson defense that held Grafton in check and kept the Clippers off the board for the final 24 minutes.
Grafton (1-1) will travel to take on Bruton on Sept. 18.
