(WYDaily Media)

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — It’s that time of year where you can’t go into a store, turn on the radio, nor watch certain television channels without being bombarded by the love and cheer of the holiday season. Each week, we want to share with you some of our newsroom staff’s favorites of the holiday and invite you to share with us yours!

This week’s topic? Holiday songs!

“I’m a little bit of a ‘grinch’ when it comes to playing holiday music. In my household, we only start listening to it the week before. If I had to choose a song in particular to rank as my ‘favorite,’ it would be Barenaked Ladies’ and Sarah McLachlan’s rendition of, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman.’ My other pick would be in honor of the late Mike Nesmith with The Monkees’ version of, ‘Riu Riu Chiu.'”

“I have two favorite Christmas songs. ‘Merry Christmas from the Family’ by Robert Earl Keen and ‘The Season’s Upon Us’ by Dropkick Murphys. These songs paint honest portraits of how chaotic, funny, maddening and beautiful extended family gatherings can be. I think most people would be hard pressed not to identify with at least one of these songs.”

“My favorite holiday song would have to be ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ by Mariah Carey, the ‘Queen of Christmas.’ The first moment of the year that you hear those first few notes, you know it’s officially time for Christmas. Whether you’re screaming the lyrics with your friends, or belting the song solo, you can’t not be in a happy mood when this song comes on.”

“If I could only pick one Christmas song it would be Donny Hathaway’s ‘This Christmas.’  That song will set the mood for your gatherings with family and loved ones and it makes for great background music when you’re crafting Coquito this year… just me? Happy Holidays!”
