It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we share the passing of Mr. Michael “Mike” Frank Staskiel, who left us on August 6, 2026, at the age of 68. Born in Williamsburg, VA, on November 24, 1957, Mike grew up in New Kent County and spent the majority of his professional life building a family and career in Northern Virginia.
For 36 dedicated years, Mike served our country through the Department of Defense, beginning his path in 1976 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and eventually retiring in 2013 from the Naval Sea Systems Command at the Washington Navy Yard. Even after hanging up his civil service hat, his strong work ethic drew him to continue contributing as a government contractor for several more years. Following this chapter, he and his wife enjoyed nearly 10 wonderful years of retirement living in the Outer Banks before eventually relocating to Moyock, NC.
Affectionately described by his daughter as a “cool dude,” Mike was a genuine people person who never met a stranger. He possessed a natural warmth and generosity, always eager to lend a helping hand or share his wealth of knowledge and experience to lift others up. Outside of work, he thrived through a diverse array of hobbies and passions. Whether he was driving miles to watch one of his great-nephews play baseball, attending local car shows with his nephew and other great-nephew, gathering with friends for weekly breakfasts with the Car Guys at Henry’s, or immersing himself in anything powered by a motor, Mike lived life fully. He took immense joy in planning and orchestrating big family reunions alongside his sister and other loved ones, creating lasting memories for everyone. He was also a proud member of both the New Kent Cruisers and Currituck Classic Cruisers, and nothing brought him quite as much joy on four wheels as his prized 1979 Camaro Z28.
Mike’s legacy of love and kindness lives on through his devoted wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Keene Staskiel; his loving daughter, Emily, and her husband, John; his sister, Margaret Mountcastle, and her husband, Richard; and a large, cherished circle of nieces and nephews. He is now reunited in peace with his parents, Zigmont and Eva Piersa Staskiel; his brother, Roger “Butch” Staskiel; his sister, Katherine Staskiel Crump; and his nephew, Eric Crump.
