Stephen Christopher Erny (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Stephen Christopher Erny, 54, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 21, 1971, in Pensacola, Florida, Stephen spent most of his life in the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach, where he built a life centered on family, friendship, and community. He attended Kempsville High School and later studied at Old Dominion University.

Stephen enjoyed a long and respected career in the automobile service industry. Known throughout the Virginia Beach community for his professionalism, integrity, and willingness to help others, he formed countless lasting friendships with coworkers, customers, and neighbors alike. To know Stephen was to know someone who was dependable, loyal, and always ready with a warm smile or a helping hand.

An avid surfer, Stephen found his greatest peace on the water. The ocean was his sanctuary, and many of his happiest days were spent catching waves, soaking in the sunshine, and sharing laughter with lifelong friends at the beach. He was also a passionate aviation enthusiast and pilot whose fascination with airplanes and flight remained with him throughout his life.

Above all, Stephen treasured the people in his life. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend who never hesitated to show up for those he loved. Whether enjoying a family gathering, spending time with friends, or simply sharing stories and laughter, Stephen made everyone around him feel welcome and valued. His genuine kindness, infectious smile, unwavering loyalty, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Stephen faced his illness with remarkable courage, resilience, and grace. Even during life’s most difficult moments, he continued to think of others first, inspiring those around him with his strength and optimism.

Stephen is survived by his loving parents, Paul and Sally Erny; his sister, Lori Erny Thomas (Matt Thomas); and his brother, Tim Erny (Nicole Piwko Erny). He was the proud and much-loved “cool uncle” to his seven nieces and nephews: Andrew, Ashley (Drew Bowles), Emily, Michael Paul, Ryan, Katie, and Claire, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Stephen’s life will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5343 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach, Virginia, followed by a reception at the church.

Family and friends are also invited to honor Stephen’s love of the ocean during a Paddle Out Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 1st Street on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate physicians, nurses, and staff of EVMS Medical Group, Virginia Oncology Associates, and the Sentara Brock Cancer Center, as well as the many other caregivers and friends whose exceptional care, kindness, and unwavering support brought comfort and hope throughout Stephen’s journey.
