Claudio Phillip Nanez was born on 31 October 1961 in Heidelberg, Germany.
His mother, Inge, married US Army Sergeant Peter Nanez. Eventually, they were transferred to the US, including younger brother Peter. Once there, Claudio helped his mother practice for their citizenship exams. This made a huge impression on Claudio in developing his patriotism. He has always been committed to the cause; however, he was saddened by the state of the world and wished it would become a kinder place.
Claudio started his professional career in the US Army as a Petroleum Supply Specialist stationed in Germany. This is probably where he developed his appreciation for heavy equipment and machinery, and it was the start of a lifetime of hard work and long hours. He was always proud of his accomplishments at the end of the day. Claudio had an enormous library of practical knowledge figured out through life experience, which he was willing to share with anyone needing help.
Claudio was as unique as his name. He had been given many nicknames over the years, but he said, given the choice, he would have chosen “Gunner.” Claudio had a huge amount of energy. He was always “larger than life”. God just made him that way! He had been bestowed early on with God’s greatest gift, the gift of Faith. He prayed that Jesus would always have his back, and if there was ever any doubt, check his right shoulder.
Claudio did not believe in half measures. He was always all in and would “tell it like it is”. Claudio could love completely. He was quick to give people a chance and had the ability to exercise forgiveness exceedingly well. He was friendly, optimistic, and generous, and would help people when he could. He was kind to children and animals. He would tell corny jokes to coax a smile. He would say things like “I don’t call you son because you’re mine; I call you sun because you shine”. He had his creative side too; always the poet, he could rhyme and write songs. He truly loved rock and roll music and remembered all the lyrics. He was a huge automobile and motorcycle enthusiast. He liked to tinker and invent and would say, “I’m taking what I have and making what I need.” He loved to travel and “make memories”.
Claudio, you will remain in our memories. You have always been a fiercely loyal and completely loving protector to all in your sphere, and we will miss you so much! Claudio goes on to reunite with his son Jason, mother Inge, and stepfather Peter, who preceded him in death. We who are left to mourn him are his son, Austin (Nikki); brother Peter; devoted and loving partner of twelve years, Kathy; stepson Peter; and beloved friends.
A memorial celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A graveside committal service with military honors will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
