Donald Edward King, 91, went to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Don was born in Covington, VA, the first son of the late Lloyd Franklin King and Alma Whitlock King. He graduated from Covington High School in 1951. He then moved to Newport News, VA to start working at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, where he worked for 45+ years.
Early in his time in Hampton Roads, Don met, fell in love with, and married Audrey Lucille Adams on November 21, 1956, in Hampton, VA. They went on to have 4 boys that they loved and raised in Newport News.
Don was very engaged in community activities there; among them as a member of the Exchange Club, a coach of Peewee League football and a board member of the Colony Pool and Recreation Center. He also served as a member of the Bayport Credit Union Board for more than 20 years. Following Don’s retirement, he moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC. Don was an active member of the Outer Banks Baptist Church.
Following the passing of his first wife, Don went on to build a special relationship/love with his second wife, Gail James, who also passed. Spending time with family and friends was among his greatest joys. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Don had a great and strong commitment to his faith and that was demonstrated in all that he said and did. Don is preceded by his parents; his wife, Audrey A. King and his second wife, Gail James.
He is survived by his sons, James E. King (Wanda), Michael L. King (Jodi, Vernell), Ronnie G. King (Lisa), and John W. King (Bruce); his sister, Alice Schuder and her husband, Jerry; his brother-in-law, Ronald E. Adams and wife, Jackie; his grandchildren, James King Jr., Sarah Beasley, Christianne King, Katie King, Michael King Jr., and Molly Liskey; as well as his great-grandchildren, Kayla King, Abigail King, Summerlyn Beasley and McKenna King.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Interment will be private.
A Memorial Service is planned to take place at a later date in Kill Devil Hills, NC, following the services in Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Outer Banks Baptist Church. Contributions to the Church should be mailed to 216 W First Street, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.
