Gary Delano Wilson Sr., a beloved father, Army veteran, and cherished member of the community, passed away on March 20, 2023, at the age of 89, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on August 7, 1933, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Robert Wilson and Alma Clay.
He was previously married to Faye Wilson, the late Janet Wilson, and the late Pamela Gatlin-Wilson. He was also preceded in death by his son, Gary D. Wilson Jr.
Gary grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 23. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and various other honor awards. During his tenure in the military, he served with honor and distinction and was respected by his fellow soldiers for his bravery, dedication, and leadership. After his honorable discharge, Gary returned to St. Louis, Missouri, and began a new chapter in his life. He had a passion for boating and enjoyed playing the saxophone. On November 15, 2021, he moved to Virginia with his son and daughter-in-law until his death.
Rest in peace, Gary. Your service, love, and legacy will never be forgotten.
Gary leaves to cherish his memories, two daughters, Temple Wilson and Brittany Howard; three sons, Delenor Wilson Sr. (Nadine), Gyor Wilson, and Gantley Wilson; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment with full military honors to follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Wilson may be viewed in the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. Facial coverings are required.
