Joan (Webb) Dekie, 88, of Williamsburg

Joan (Webb) Dekie (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

On May 19, 1934, Joan Dekie the youngest of seven siblings was born to the late Peter and Teresa Webb in Pendleton, South Carolina. She went home to be with the Lord on March 23, 2023, at the Arbors at Towne Park in Williamsburg, Virginia.

“Ma or Nana,” as her children and grandchildren affectingly called her, migrated in to Brooklyn, New York, in 1944 and attended P.S. 35 Middle School and Eastern District High School.

Joan began her career with the New York City Board of Education, where she worked for thirty-plus years until retiring.

On October 8, 1955, she married the love of her life, Hisao Dekie. This union was blessed with two sons, Darryl M. Dekie and Lance K. Dekie.

In the fifties, she joined Union Baptist Church, where Rev. A.A. Wood baptized her. Her favorite spiritual hymn was “Pass Me Not Oh Gentle Savior.” She was always full of life and loved to laugh and dance. She could always make you laugh even when you felt low in spirit. She always put everyone’s needs first over her own. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Joan was preceded in death by her son, Darryl, and siblings. Left to cherish her precious memories are her husband, Hisao; son, Lance (Tammy); six grandchildren, Teyonna, Lance Jr., Tyrelle, Toyelle, and Tamara; four great-grandchildren, Kymora, Chase, Nathaniel, and Gabrielle; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Whiting’s Funeral Home with prayer and words of comfort beginning at 10 a.m. Livestream will start at 10 a.m. Facial coverings are required.
