William “Bill” David Schoenberg, 79, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 8, 2022 surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Bill was a long-time resident of Newport News, VA. He was an active member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and a man of great faith. He served his country with pride and loyalty for 30 years in the US Navy and regularly participated in US Submarine Veteran’s meetings with the Hampton Roads Base Holland Club. Bill loved to golf, shop at the Ft. Eustis commissary, and walk in his beloved neighborhood where he would greet friends old and new with a cheery hello – he never met a stranger. Most important to him was his family. He was a loving spouse and a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathleen; his daughters, Jennifer (John) Wheatley and Susan Schoenberg; grandchildren, Jessica (Alan) Cooke, Dustin (Megan) Lomaoang, and Alston Wheatley; five great-grandchildren; his siblings, Grace, Kathy, Tom, and John and their spouses as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a kind, loving, generous man who will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Rev. George Prado. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
