WILLIAMSBURG — God called home our beloved Doris Denise Thompson, 58, Friday, May 7, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Her life began Jan. 15, 1963, daughter of the late McKinley and Sarah Thompson.
At an early age, Doris attended Mount Ararat Baptist Church, where she sang with the Junior Choir. She enjoyed going to church, singing, and playing her tambourine. Later in life, Doris gave her life to the Lord and joined hands in fellowship with many churches, most recently, Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, until her health began to decline.
She attended the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. After graduating from Lafayette High School and the LPN program there, she started her career at Eastern State Hospital. She went on to work at many other facilities before working as a private duty nurse taking care of kids with love and compassion until her retirement.
Doris was married to John Washington, and from that union, she was blessed with two children.
Doris was a great cook. Her family, and others in the Williamsburg community, enjoyed her dishes when she worked at restaurants and eateries, including the Sheraton, Marino’s, and Frank’s Truck Stop. She also liked birdwatching, as well as nature, and mostly, spending time with her friends, family, and grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Granny.”
Ms. Thompson was preceded in death by her daughter, Batina L. Graham; brother, McKinley Thompson Jr.; and sister, Shelia Thompson.
She leaves to cherish her memories two children, Chasidy Thompson-Washington (Deon) and John Washington Jr. (Celeste); six grandchildren, Jordan Thompson (Kendall) Tyrek Graham, Tyjuan Graham, John Washington III, Monroe Washington and McKinley Washington; two sisters, Daphne Francis and Sarah Thompson; brother, Alston Thompson (Sherri); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 15, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Due to the current health pandemic, only 50 people may be in attendance with facial coverings and social-distancing requirements. Livestreaming will be available at the beginning of the service.
