WILLIAMSBURG — Janet Maria Chalke, 88, formerly of Scituate, Massachusetts, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021. Her husband, Phillip W. Chalke, preceded her in death.
After attending high school at the Academy of Holy Angels, in Demarest, New Jersey, Janet earned her B.A. from Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. She retired as a legal secretary, and was the former acting town manager of Cohasset, Massachusetts. During her time in Williamsburg, she was a member of Saint Bede Catholic Church, and she often attended Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists.
Janet was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a true and faithful friend. She loved spending time at the ocean and traveling. An avid reader, she belonged to several book clubs. She enjoyed dancing, arts and crafts, including knitting for hospital patients and newborns, and talking politics and current events. She was also a generous supporter of various children’s organizations, Catholic charities, and liberal causes.
She is survived by her children, Janet Spaulding (Harlan Spaulding) of Carver, Massachusetts, Susan Peterson (Heather Scully) of Williamsburg, John Peterson of Kiel, Germany, Sheila Peterson of Cape Coral, Florida, Neil Peterson of Wilton, Connecticut, Elizabeth D’Urbano (Todd D’Urbano) of Ashland, Massachusetts, and Paul Peterson (Kim Peterson) of Chester, New Hampshire. Her eight grandchildren, Harlan Spaulding, Jonathan Spaulding, Norah Peterson, Drew Peterson, Wesley Peterson, Jenna Peterson, Sean Peterson and Alexis Peterson, will also miss her.
A prayer service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 15, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg.
