
HAMPTON — Forrest Joseph Gary, 79, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021.
Forrest was a native and lifelong Peninsula resident. He graduated from Newport News High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a former employee of Newport Shipbuilding and served with the Newport News Fire Department, along with his late father, Captain Harry A. Gary.
He served as a sergeant with the Williamsburg Sheriff’s Department and later worked with Newport News Sheriff’s Department. Forrest was also the former owner of G&G Auto Sales in Hampton and owned his own collection agency in his later years, working with his son as a general contractor.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Peggy Sue Gary; parents, Captain Harry and Adelaide Gary; brothers, Jerry, Roscoe and Harry Gary Jr.; and sisters, Adelaide Raymond and Mary Ellen VanZant.
He is survived by his son, Lee Gary, and his wife, Donna, of Hampton; granddaughters, Madelyn Drew (Christopher) Stephany Plantz (Nathan) and Donna Elizabeth Lawrence; and great-grandchildren, Emma Faith Drew and River Ray Plantz; siblings, Harryette Thomas, Charles Gary (Jackie), Warren Gary (Beverly) and Carolyn Gary; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Forrest and Peggy Sue will be held at Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. For more information regarding dates and times, please visit Amory Funeral Home.
