Maurice C. Avery, 89, happily married for 70 glorious years

WILLIAMSBURG — Retired U.S. Army Major Maurice C. Avery, 89, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2021, at his home.

Maurice was born Feb. 17, 1931, in the town of Maine, New York, to Ardella Minnie Haskins Avery and Maurice Desmond Avery. Throughout his growing years, Maurice worked on farms in upstate New York while paying his way through school until he had the opportunity to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he retired as a major.

After the military, Maurice worked and retired from civil service working with the U.S. Navy and made his new home in Williamsburg. Maurice married Betty Payne Avery in 1951. They were happily married for 70 glorious years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Avery; and seven children, Mark, Debbie Doyal, Chris, Judie Allen, Paul, Jim and Tim; along with 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at Nelsen Funeral Home. Memorial services will follow visitation at the funeral home. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Williamsburg Memorial Park.
