
Cleo Joyner Hayes, 83, affectionately known as “Bunkie,” passed into eternity Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019. She was born July 3, 1936, in Potecasi, North Carolina, to the late Dallas and Iris Pierce Joyner.
She graduated from Huntington High School in 1955 and worked as a nurse’s aide at Zion Baptist Home for the Elderly and retired from Hilton Plaza Adult Home in 1989.
Cleo was united in marriage to Adron Nash Hayes Sr., who preceded her in death. She will be sadly missed by her son, Arnold (Pookie) Hayes; daughters, Jacquelyn Hayes, Jocelyn Hayes Brewer (Michael) and Kalandra Hayes Wooden (Moon); grandchildren, Adron III, Jonathan, Bridget, Iris, Stephen, Isiah, Laura, Mia, Michael, Gregory (David), Timothy, Charity and Jakia; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, William L. Joyner (Barbara) and Wingate Joyner; two sisters, Gloria Jean and Marie Joyner; and two daughters-in-law, Abi and Gloria Hayes.
Cleo was preceded in death by her sons, Adron Nash Hayes Jr., Orlando Dewayne Hayes and Stephen Roger Hayes; and beloved sister, Pecolia Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at Standing on the Promises of God Worship Center, 7204 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. The Hayes family will be receiving condolences, welcoming friends and family at 135 Lassiter Drive #1 Hampton.
