Mary J. Redcross was peacefully called home to be with her heavenly father Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, with her loving daughter by her side. Her life’s journey began Jan. 2, 1919, daughter of the late Estelle and Fred Armstead of James City County. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Luvenia, and twin, Martha Ann; brothers, Alfred and George; and daughter, Mary L. Redcross.

Mary was the oldest living member of Union Baptist Church and happily served as an usher for many years. She retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation after 38 years of dedicated service. She loved to watch baseball and was a true avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. She was a longtime resident of the Highland Park community, a lifetime member of the NAACP and Democratic Party. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who was always willing to help a neighbor. She had a kind word and a smile for everyone she met. Mary will be greatly missed by all, but we find comfort in knowing she is now resting in the arms of Jesus.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories, daughter, Vernice F. Redcross; grandchildren, Carla Caldwell, James Redcross, Vivian Redcross, Benita Whitby (Ronald, Sr.), Jonathan Redcross (Xenia), Tikisha Redcross-Gilliam (Jesse); twelve great-grandchildren, Antonio, Rashawn, Lamont, Aleshia, Quinton, Keosha, Porche, Ronald, Jr., Alex, Justin, Daniel, Ivon; three nieces, Jane Williams, Evella Quarells, and Shirley Pennington; a host of great- nieces and nephew, other loving relatives and friends.

Mrs. Redcross may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A service celebrating her life will be held at noon, Saturday, Feb. 9, at Union Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Mary Redcross to the Union Baptist Church Building Fund.

Share online condolences with the family at Whiting’s Funeral Home.
