Martha Jean Smith, 69, deeply involved in her church and community

Martha Jean Smith, 69, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, in Virginia Beach.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Charles; daughters, LaJill Hunt and LaToya (James) Turner of Virginia Beach; son, Chaz Smith of Virginia Beach; brothers, Marshall Hunt Jr. and Roy (Kimberly) Hunt of Mobile, Alabama; sister, Gloria Scott of Louisville, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Joycelyn W. Hunt of Mobile, Alabama; brothers-in-law, Marshall (Shawan) Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, and John (Deloris) Smith of Hampton, South Carolina; sisters-in-law, Carrie Frink of Ash, Edith (James) Williams of Ridgeland, South Carolina, and Barbara Orr of Summerville, South Carolina; five beautiful grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall Hunt Sr. and Minnie Hunt; sister-in-law, Lillian Hunt of Mobile, Alabama; brother-in-law, Leroy Fink of Ash, North Carolina.

Martha Smith was a great educator and loving mother figure who was deeply involved in her church and community. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She enjoyed reading, ministering to others and trivia. Her family and friends will always remember her as a no nonsense, direct and funny person who was always willing to help.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. A homegoing celebration will be held at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 9, at New Light Baptist Church, 5549 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park with a reception to follow at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend.
