Joan Alice Lohmann Geroe, 87, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.
Joan was the fourth daughter of Lewis and Katherine (Driscoll) Lohmann of Brooklyn, New York. She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Katherine, and her husband, Alphonce Mattino, Barbara, and her husband, Harry O’Dell, Eileen, and her husband, Joseph McKenzie; and son, Kenneth V. Geroe.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Marvin K. “Ken” Geroe; daughter Gabrielle “Missy,” and her husband, P. Scott Zimmerman, of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Daniel K. Geroe of Manassas, Katherine, and her husband, Taylor Keating, and their son, Graham, of Charlottesville, Caroline Geroe of Arlington, and Margaret Geroe, and her husband, Nick Bortle, of Richmond; and step-grandchildren, Shayna Zimmerman Gilbert of Stamford, Connecticut, and Dane Zimmerman of Hampton.
Joan graduated from the NYU Bellevue School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1952. She worked at the Bellevue Hospital in Obstetrics. She married Ken Geroe in 1953 and served as a Navy wife for 24 years. They retired to Virginia Beach in 1978. Here, they became involved with The Church of the Holy Family, working with various ministries of the church during their 30-plus years as parish members. Joan was a gracious hostess, loved to play games, garden and read. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In her later years, Joan developed the debilitating disease of dementia, eventually requiring full-time medical care. In August 2017, Joan and Ken moved to Patriots Colony in Williamsburg to provide for Joan’s care and simplify responsibilities for Ken. Joan was cared for and loved by her family and the Patriots Colony staff. Ken was at her side when she was released from this disease and reunited with her son and family members in God’s community of Saints.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach.
