David Alton Cassell, 80, retired welding instructor

David Alton Cassell, 80, lovingly known as “Pop,” passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018. Born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, to the late Latishia M. and Samuel A. Cassell.

He was a lifelong resident of Newport News and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a welding instructor. David was a dedicated, longtime member of First Friends Church, Hampton.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Peggy M. Cassell; daughters, Donna L. Rivers (George), Shelia G. Butner (Carl) and Cynthia A. Parker; sons, David M. Cassell and Charlie W. Bolton Jr.; sisters, Dorothy L. Clifton and Betty L. Nester; brother, Billy G. Cassell; and 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 17, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home with burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will gather immediately following burial at 29 Edgemont Drive, Hampton.
