Herbert Woodrow ‘Woodie’ Raines Jr., 80, lived a life of humility and integrity

Herbert Woodrow “Woodie” Raines Jr., 80, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Herbert Sr. and Catherine Raines. He was a graduate of Norview High School and met his wife of 57 years in the bookstore on the campus of William & Mary Extension (now ODU). He retired as the department head of Information Management Systems at Naval Safety Center, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, and was the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. After retiring from civil service, he worked for 10 years at SteelMaster Buildings, where he enjoyed the entrepreneurial-spirited small business. This past November, Woodie graduated from the Virginia Beach Citizens’ Police Academy. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Evelyn Raines; daughter, Tracy Gregorio, and her husband, Robert; son, Michael Raines, and his wife, Beverly; brother, Gene Raines, and his wife, Faye; and grandchildren, Rachel Stewart, Joshua Stewart and Andrew Raines; and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Woodie lived a selfless life devoted to his family. He loved Virginia and enjoyed its splendor with many trips to the mountains and the beaches. Woodie followed the Winning Team Playbook, The Holy Bible. He lived a life of humility and integrity and was surrounded with happiness and love from his family and neighbors.

A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at First Baptist Church, Norfolk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Princess Anne Courthouse Volunteer Rescue Squad (Station 5 and 21).
